Cattle were meant to eat grass and people were meant to eat cattle.  As omnivores, about the only thing humans cannot eat is grass.  To capture the nutritional value of grass, which has harvested the sun's energy, humans have to eat animals that capture that nutritional value.  The United States is the only country in the world that feeds cattle grain (primarily corn) in huge feedlots (that have their own set of health and environmental issues).  At the end of the day, as much as 60% or more of America's diet consists of corn and its byproducts.  Corn is cheap and abundant; grassfed takes longer and is more expensive.
